Samuel Denny’s obit Watertown Daily Times Sept. 15 1915. It states that
he Samuel married Miss Salina Bellinger 40 years ago. Survived by one
son Samel jr. one daugther Mrs Louse Cannell both of Clayton and one
Stepdaugther Mrs Jennie COLYER, Oconto Falls Wis;
Just a
note when I was researching the Clayton area apparently the priest
(French) at the time encouraged the people there to use their French
names not anglicised. Therefore I thought that Bellinger/Balinger
maybe the French way of Spelling/saying BELOND. Just guessing here
though.
Jennie
Colliers obit states that she has a half sister living in Clayton, so
that all adds up also on Jen’s obit it say’s she was born 9th
of May 1851, just three day’s off from what is stated in Ziba’s pension
file also there are two witness mentioned as being present at the birth
of Ziba and Selinas daughters. Dianna

And if this is your Ziba Benway, in 1860, with a daughter indexed as Eugene
on the image an f for sex and on the image Beneway looks like Benaway to me.
Name:
Liba Beneway [Ziba Beneway]
Age in 1860: 33
Birth Year: abt 1827

Home in 1860: Denmark, Lewis, New York
Gender: Male
Post Office: Deer River

Household Members:
Liba Beneway, 33
Salina Beneway, 28, b. abt. 1832, Canada
Eugene Beneway, 9, F, b. abt. 1851, NY
**Amelia Beneway, 6, F, b. abt. 1854, NY -
possible in 1870
as Emeline, Clayton NY, in 1855 she is indexed
as Millenia and in 1870
there is Emeline Vincent, Wilna, NY, living with
husband Cathus and mother Selina Benaway - which I pick Emeline Vincent as
Amelia
the spelling Beneway, does not lead me to 1870. And it appears Ziba &
Selina/Salina may have came from Canada about 1849-1850.
Wilna is 20 miles from Denmark NY and Carthage lies between the two
townships which are near Fort Drum, whose history dates back to 1809.
During the 1830s and 1840s, the Lower Canada Rebellion in Canada prompted a
new round of military preparations and Madison Barracks became the home of
artillery units.
Lower Canada Rebellion, 6 Nov 1837 — 10 Nov 1838, present day Quebec.
So this bit of History could be important to why Ziba came to NY from Canada
