Joseph L. Grennan is Summoned
Pneumonia Claims Popular Young Express Messenger of C. B. A. Q. (ACBQ?)

11 Dec 1918
Joseph Grennan, for seven years one of the most generally well liked and best
known employees in the local express companies, died last night at the St.
Mary's hospital after a week's illness with pneumonia. News of his passing has
been received with deepest sorrow by his friends in the entire community.
Joseph L. Grennan was born in Joliet, June 20, 1882. He was the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Joseph Grennan, of 408 South Shabbona street. The father passed away about
five years ago.
He has lived in this city for over twenty years, and received his education in
the schools of this city. For the past seven years he has been employed in the
local express companies, the Adams and the American Offices. Since the
consolidation of the offices he has been employed for a few months at the
Halladay works, and recently as express messenger on the Aurora branch of the
Chicago, Burlington & Quincy line.
He contracted pneumonia within the past week and for many days his life has hung
in the balance. News of his death has been received with deepest sorrow today,
for his many friends were hoping against hope that the young man would be
spared. Those who know the Grennan family innately are aware of the close ties
of affection which bind this family circle together, and which makes these sons
and daughters so devoted to their mother and to each other. The harmony which
exists between them is ideal, and any break in such a circle is very sad.
Joseph was a devout and faithful member of the Immaculate Conception Church, and
was a member of the Woodmen Lodge.
Surviving with the grief stricken mother are the following brothers and sisters:
Frank [2], Henry and Edward, of Streator; James, of Chicago; William, of Fort
Sheridan; Mrs. Jenne? Hall, Magdalene and Mildred of this city.
Funeral services will be private and will be held from Solon's undertaking rooms
at 9 a.m. Thursday. The remains will be shipped to Odell for interment in St.
Paul's cemetery.

The casualty list for today includes in the list of killed
in action, Joseph Grennan son of Mrs. Anna Grennan, Dwight, IL. Joseph
is a cousin of the late Joseph Grennan of this city, who died December 10 of
pneumonia. Joseph Grennan war hero has a sister, Miss Maud Grennan in this
city. Her older sister, Miss Florence, is well known here. She has just
recovered from a very serious attack of the flu, so serious in fact, that her
mother went up to Chicago to help nurse her back to health. She is still very
weak, so the sad news of her brother's and her cousins’ death must have been hard
to bear.
